Participants will wind their own electromagnetic coils, to be used as part of an experimental loudspeaker improvised from a found object resonator supplied by the participant.
Workshop Description:
1) A short artist’s talk, practical demonstration and introduction to the subject of electromagnetism.
2) Participants wind their own electromagnetic coils, to be used as part of of an experimental loudspeaker. The loudspeaker is improvised from a found object resonator supplied by the participant.
Participants must bring possible resonators – plastic food containers, buckets, drums, cans, glasses … etc. Does it sound good when you tap your finger on it or speak into it? Bring it along! Bring several things – not everything will work; this is the experimental part.
Workshop Presenter:
Peter Flemming is a “folk machinery artist” who tinkers “intensively and intuitively”. His past work has included lazy machines, solar powered artwork and hypnotically repetitive automata, whilst recently he has been making situational kinetic sound installations about resonance, with electromagnetically activated materials, mechanical performers and makeshift amplification devices. He has exhibited extensively internationally and has received numerous grants, awards and residencies. He currently lives and works in Montréal.
