The ISEA2013 program will take over greater Sydney and beyond, with the announcement of projects at Powerhouse Museum, The Rocks Pop-Up, Carriageworks, 107 Projects, the College of Fine Arts UNSW, COFA’s Kudos Gallery, Tin Sheds Gallery, Verge Gallery, UTS Gallery and DAB LAB, Artspace as well as a Parramatta hub and projects linking Darwin, the Tasmanian Wilderness and Indonesia to Sydney.

The 19th International Symposium on Electronic Art — presented by the Australian Network for Art and Technology (ANAT) and supported by Destination NSW to align with Vivid Sydney — will showcase the best media artworks and future-focused ideas from Australia and around the world, Friday 7 to Sunday 16 June 2013 at venues across central and outer Sydney, and Darwin.

The ISEA2013 EXHIBITIONS PROGRAM will showcase the works of over 150 innovative Australian and international artists.

The Powerhouse Museum will also be a major exhibition hub for ISEA2013. Already announced is Experimenta Speak to Me – 5th International Biennial of Media Art featuring Wade Marynowski and Jess MacNeil. Exhibiting alongside this is the first survey of ANAT’s Synapse initiative that has provided over 30 Australian artists with the opportunity to pursue speculative creative research projects with scientists and medical researchers in Australia and beyond. The Synapse: A Selection provides a snapshot of the diverse and fascinating collaborative projects that participating artists and scientists have produced over the past five years and includes works by Keith Armstrong, Helen Pynor and Peter Clancy, George Poonkin Khut, Mari Velonaki, Erica Secombe, Ken+Julia Yonetani, Nola Farman, Chris Henschke and Kirsty Boyle.

International leaders in the BioArt field, SymbioticA, the Centre of Excellence in Biological Arts based at the University of Western Australia, will present their first major Australian exhibition bringing together the works of 15 artists from different disciplines semipermeable (+). Featuring sworks specially commissioned for the exhibition including Nigel Helyer and Oron Catts – the groundbreaking artistic interventions range from protocells, infection and DNA through to skins and garments, to borders and state control at The Powerhouse Museum.

ISEA2013 and the Sydney Harbour Foreshore Authority present Electronic Art Pop-Ups, a special instalment in the ongoing pop-up program at The Rocks. ISEA2013 has selected six outstanding artworks from across the globe to bring the latest in contemporary art into the heart of this historic area of Sydney.

Electronic Nights will transform Parramatta’s River Foreshore with interactive artworks, performances and food, presented by ISEA2013 and Parramatta City Council. Over two nights, Friday 15 and Saturday 16 June from dusk to late, encounter interactive artworks along the riverbank that explore movement and sound, electrical generation, multi media performance and art and roaming data projections.

Projects include Grobak Padi 2013 an intimate exchange between cultures and cities through a fusion of food, film and dance using ‘gerobak’ – traditional Indonesian food carts. Wired up carts will link Sydney and Yogyakarta, Indonesia, live via multi-channel links, along with in-cart video art and a multimedia dance spectacle by artists Michael Hornblow (Australia), Agung Gunawan (Indonesia) and Tony Yap (Australia/Malaysia).

Keith Armstrong’s collaborative work, facilitated by the Information and Cultural Exchange (ICE), Long Time, No See? is an opportunity for the public to create possible futures through data mapping and a smartphone App on local walks throughout Parramatta City.

Darwin and Sydney will be connected through The Portals, a curated program of five telematic artworks distributed across these two cities. As large screens proliferate in our environment can we imagine a different way of using these resources aside from broadcasting TV? This project connects the extensive urban infrastructure of The Concourse in Sydney’s Chatswood with communities in Darwin in real time across two large public screens through networked and interactive artworks, via high speed broadband. The Portals includes live art, visual art, e-literature, interactive performance, sound art and community engagement.

Other exhibitions will showcase the diversity of electronic art practice including the week-long collaborative production of an expanded Durational Book being created at the State Library of NSW by 6 artists, including Chris Caines and Megan Heyward, the meeting of electronic art and architecture at the Tin Sheds Gallery, a sound art exhibition at UTS Gallery, experiments in cinema at COFA-UNSW’s iCinema and an exploration of place and representation at COFA’s Kudos Gallery, with the interactive installation Juxtaposition, combining two radically different environments: the Tasmanian wilderness and the extreme urban development of Hong Kong. In an apparently endless stereoscopic 3D giga-pixel panoramic montage, the two locations merge seamlessly from one into another as the observer turns the circular ‘screen’ to control both the viewpoint and the related soundscape.

ISEA2013 will feature two programs of sound art performances: Macrophonics II by Donna Hewitt, Julian Knowles, Wade Marynowsky, and dancers, presented in association with UTS; and Polysonics, with performances by Michaela Davies, Ian Andrews, Garry Bradbury, Shane Fahey, Evan Carr, David Carr, Hamish Stuart, Leah Barclay, Garth Paine at ABC, Studio 22.

JULIAN ASSANGE will present a Special Keynote speech at the International Symposium on Electronic Art (ISEA2013), presented by the Australian Network for Art and Technology (ANAT) at the University of Sydney on Thursday 13 June 2013 at 5.30pm.

The Wikileaks founder will address conference delegates and a small public audience via live video link from the Ecuadorian Embassy in London.

ISEA2013 will showcase the best media artworks and future-focused ideas from around the world across greater Sydney from 7 – 16 June.

Central to ISEA2013 is a three-day conference featuring over 200 speakers and keynote addresses from global leaders in the fields of art, science, technology, media and communications exploring the theme: Resistance is Futile.

Julian Assange has a unique insight into the futility, or otherwise, of resisting the incursion of the digital into every aspect of our lives.

In systems under constant and multiple pressures there will always be leaks. Wikileaks exists because of this, embracing the digital, exploiting the ubiquity of digitised information: Resistance is Fertile.

Artists creatively investigate the possibilities and push the limits of new technologies, helping us to imaginatively experience and critically reflect on their implications for life in the 21st century.

The ISEA2013 program explores the ways art and new technologies are used in the service of power, protest and resistance.

ISEA2013 conference delegates receive entry to this Special Keynote address. A limited number of tickets will be made available to the general public through the ISEA2013 website from 9.00am, Monday 20 May 2013.

Hong Kong / Tokyo based artist Eric Siu uses photos or ‘Touch-Snaps’ to remind us of the ephemeral richness of togetherness, and challenge the disembodying nature of social media, which dehumanises physical contact.
“I am a human camera. If you touch me, my shutters open and I take a photo!”
Touchy

Prepare for citywide disruption as Australia’s notorious tactical media art group pvi collective (Australia) takes over the streets of Darlinghurst during Deviator, presented by ISEA 2013, Performance Space and National Art School. During the twilight hours, immerse yourself in an outdoor game experience and become an urban ‘deviator’, temporarily transforming the city into a playground.

Stereopublic (Crowdsourcing the Quiet), an attempt to both promote ‘sonic health’ in our cities and offer a public guide for those who crave a retreat from crowds, is coming to Sydney. It will recruit members of the public as ‘earwitnesses’. Sound artist Jason Sweeney will then create an individual quiet sound piece for you and your location, sending it back to you in exchange for your participation. Once this exchange is complete, your city-specific location will be placed on an ever-growing virtual soundmap of Sydney.

The City Data Slam, run by creative producers at Carbon Arts, will bring together leading national and international data art practitioners to jam with Sydney’s sustainability data over the last weekend of ISEA 2013 in Object Gallery’s new workshop space, designed by ARUP’s urban informatics group.

Join dLux MediaArts and Dorkbot as part of ISEA2013 for Art Hackfest, an open-source hackfest that creates an environment for new artistic experiences and collaborations over two days. During this event artists, designers, techies and more will come together in Sydney and in the satellite locations of Darwin and Byron Bay to explore the participatory nature of technology and art.

The 19th International Symposium on Electronic Art presented by Australian Network for Art and Technology (ANAT) and supported by Destination NSW to align with Vivid Sydney will showcase the best media artworks and future-focused ideas from Australia and around the world, Friday 7 to Sunday 16 June 2013 at venues across greater Sydney.

ISEA International, founded in The Netherlands in 1990, fosters interdisciplinary exchange among culturally diverse organisations and individuals working with art, science and technology. Last seen in Sydney in 1992, the annual International Symposium on Electronic Art (ISEA) returns 21 years later to deliver another ground-breaking event.

In that time, digital art has moved from the margins to become part of the fabric of everyday life. At once ubiquitous and unnoticed, resistance to electronic art has proven futile — it now lies embedded in the heart of our contemporary cultures. The symposium events will infuse the city’s social, digital and physical infrastructure.

A highlight of the program is the Australian premiere of test pattern, a stunning large-scale immersive installation by renowned Japanese artist Ryoji Ikeda. Carriageworks and ISEA2013, proudly collaborating with Vivid Sydney, the Southern Hemisphere’s largest celebration of light, music and ideas, co-present test pattern at Carriageworks from 8 June until 1 July 2013. Like many of Ikeda’s electrifying works, test pattern represents the intense energies of the massive data flows that increasingly shape our globalised world.

Ikeda recently staged a similar installation at The Armory in New York, described by The New York Times as a ‘sublime spectacle’ and ‘spectacular, trippy and fun’. New York Magazine described Ikeda’s work as ‘an extreme and elaborate visual and sonic environment’.

In addition to test pattern, Ryoji Ikeda will perform datamatics 2.0, a one-night only event at Carriageworks on the evening of Friday 7 June 2013. This is a new full-length version of Ikeda’s acclaimed audio-visual concert.

WATCH Ryoji Ikeda video

Also central to ISEA2013 is a stimulating program of artists’ presentations, creative dialogues and critical debates that will unearth the latest thinking and ideas in contemporary culture. The three-day ISEA2013 Conference will feature over 200 speakers, as well as eight 8 keynote addresses from global leaders in the fields of art, science, technology, media and communications. Topics to be discussed include emerging cultural forms such as bio-art, data representation, robotics, augmented realities and urban and virtual ecologies.

The Opening Keynote address will be by Michael Naimark, a New York-based internationally renowned pioneering media artist. The conference will take place from Tuesday 11 to Thursday 13 June at The University of Sydney. Registrations for early bird discounts are available now, bookings are essential: http://www.isea2013.org/events/conference/.

The ISEA2013 TALKS PROGRAM, in collaboration with Vivid Ideas, will inspire new thinking and creative paradigms through provocative speakers such as Italian media critics and hacktivists Alessandro Ludovico and Paolo Cirio, whose infamous online project Face to Facebook involved stealing 1 million Facebook profiles, filtering them with face-recognition software, and then posting them on a custom-made dating website.

The ISEA2013 EXHIBITIONS PROGRAM, will showcase the works of over 150 contemporary artists from Australia and around the world in venues throughout inner Sydney, Parramatta and Campbelltown. Exhibitions include: Experimenta’s Speak To Me at the Powerhouse Museum, Catching Light at Campbelltown Arts Centre, and Running the City at UNSW Galleries, COFA.

Performances and Workshops will engage and entice audiences at events including Night depot #3 at First Draft, Chip Music Festival, Breathing Monster featuring Myriam Gourfink and Kasper Toeplitz, and Theta lab featuring George Khut and James Brown.

Full details of these events will be profiled on the ISEA2013 website and we’ll be announcing more program highlights in coming weeks. Visit www.isea2013.org regularly to keep up to date with developments as they arise!

This project has been assisted by the Australian Government through the Australia Council, its funding and advisory body.

The full ISEA2013 program will be announced in 3 program releases.

ISEA2013 Director, Jonathan Parsons is available for media interviews.
