ISEA2013 Sydney is the world’s opportunity to peek in to the future of art, technology and science – from human cameras to Blade Runner scale Media Facades exploring innovation through a program of exhibitions, performances, talks, workshops and a 3-day conference featuring the most brilliant new ideas in the world today.
The 19th International Symposium on Electronic Art presented by Australian Network for Art and Technology (ANAT) and supported by Destination NSW to align with Vivid Sydney will showcase the best media artworks and future-focused ideas from Australia and around the world, Friday 7 to Sunday 16 June 2013 at venues across greater Sydney.
The second of three program announcements includes the MCA, COFA, UNSW, Carriageworks, Performance Space, Artspace, Customs House and the Seymour Centre as well as roving locations throughout the city.
The ISEA2013 EXHIBITIONS PROGRAM, will showcase the works of over 150 innovative artists from Australia and around the world. In partnership with Carriageworks, ISEA2013 presents Alex Davies (Australia) Very Near Future large scale mixed reality / interactive cinema installation which will question what is real or virtual, fact or fiction. In partnership with Performance Space, Body Fluid II (Redux) by John A Douglas (Australia) a performance and video installation in which the artist presents the monotony of his daily dialysis treatment as a sublime act of self-transformation.
Artspace presents in association with ISEA 2013 an exhibition featuring Mari Velonaki(Australia), Petra Gemeinboeck & Rob Saunders (Australia) and Simon Ingram (New Zealand). The Media Facade Exhibition curated by M. Hank Haeusler & Martin Tomitsch at Customs House showcases six seminal media façades through large light posters and moving images as well as a selection of new media façade projects from around the world. The exhibition is organised by the Media Architecture Institute and Customs House in collaboration with Vivid Sydney and ISEA2013.
The ISEA2013 TALKS PROGRAM in collaboration with Vivid Ideas will inspire new thinking and creative paradigms through provocative speakers including program highlight - Stelarc (Australia) presented by ISEA2013 and MCA, in partnership with the National Institute for Experimental Arts at COFA, UNSW. ISEA2013 proudly collaborating with Vivid Sydney presents Mark Hosler, Negativland (US), Fee Plumley (UK/Australia), Kate Chapman (USA), Genevieve Bell, Director of Interaction and Experience at Intel Labs (Australia/US) and ISEA2013 Keynote by Brian Rogers on Perception, Art & Illusion (UK).
Electronic music will be showcased during performances at NEW WAVE: SOUNDpresented by Seymour Centre and Vivid Sydney in association with ISEA2013, 7 – 8 June. The two day intensive program features emerging and established artists showcasing their most innovative work. The Seymour’s intimate Sound Lounge will feature non-stop performances from midday to 11pm on Saturday the 8th June presenting acts such as The Noise, Infinity room, Frostbyte and Collarbones.
Roving interactions with Touchy known as the human camera will happen across the city. Hong Kong / Tokyo based artist Eric Siu uses photos or ‘Touch-Snaps’ to remind us of the ephemeral richness of togetherness, and challenge the disembodying nature of social media, which dehumanises physical contact.

Touchy
Prepare for citywide disruption as Australia’s notorious tactical media art group pvi collective (Australia) takes over the streets of Darlinghurst during Deviator, presented by ISEA 2013, Performance Space and National Art School. During the twilight hours, immerse yourself in an outdoor game experience and become an urban ‘deviator’, temporarily transforming the city into a playground.
Stereopublic (Crowdsourcing the Quiet), an attempt to both promote ‘sonic health’ in our cities and offer a public guide for those who crave a retreat from crowds, is coming to Sydney. It will recruit members of the public as ‘earwitnesses’. Sound artist Jason Sweeney will then create an individual quiet sound piece for you and your location, sending it back to you in exchange for your participation. Once this exchange is complete, your city-specific location will be placed on an ever-growing virtual soundmap of Sydney.
The City Data Slam, run by creative producers at Carbon Arts, will bring together leading national and international data art practitioners to jam with Sydney’s sustainability data over the last weekend of ISEA 2013 in Object Gallery’s new workshop space, designed by ARUP’s urban informatics group.
Join dLux MediaArts and Dorkbot as part of ISEA2013 for Art Hackfest, an open-source hackfest that creates an environment for new artistic experiences and collaborations over two days. During this event artists, designers, techies and more will come together in Sydney and in the satellite locations of Darwin and Byron Bay to explore the participatory nature of technology and art.
